What time is it? PBJ Time!
Do you love peanut butter? Do you love jelly? Do you love peanut butter and jelly? Well, if you're a college student in Pittsburgh, or you're from Pittsburgh, or you find yourself in Pittsburgh for any type of reason, be sure to plan a trip to Peanut Butter Jelly Time! Located on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield, it's an easy bus ride away (@ Pitt students take the 54 right from fifth ave) or an uber. Once you walk inside, you won't regret it!
After walking in, I was greeted with a menu so big and long that I had no idea where to even start. Luckily, one of the partners of PBJ Time, Lauren, and another employee, Jay, were ready to recommend their favorites and whip them up for me in a timely fashion. They were already making one of their popular sushi rolls when I walked up to the counter! Don't worry, they're not mixing fish and pb with these creations... at least not yet. Lauren told me that her and her brother spent an insane amount of time testing and trying different combinations, so the menu is a majority of the testings deemed successful. I tried the "Blueberry Yum Yum" which is described on the menu as "blueberry jam spread inside white bread, rolled with chunky peanut butter and topped with fresh blueberries." Though I am an avid team creamy peanut butter person, this did not disappoint, and I found myself really enjoying the chunky pb contrasted with the blueberries. Plus, the sauces that were drizzled on top were AMAZING. I kept scraping up the deliciousness because I couldn't get enough. It was extremely ~photo worthy~ and tasted as good as it looks in the picture!
Next, I obviously needed something involving chocolate and something messy to eat. Would a trip be complete if I didn't leave wearing half of whatever I ate all over my face and hands? The answer is (obviously) no. Jay read my mind and brought out mini wipes for any mess, which was amazing! My eye caught "Give Me S'more" immediately, and I knew I needed to have that in my stomach. Made with Cinnabon bred, this bad boy is filled with marshmallow fluff, Hershey's chocolate spread, and WHOLE graham crackers. Yes, the sandwich includes both Cinnabon bread and graham crackers. Need I say more? Plus, it's served with a side of creamy peanut butter, so you can heap it on without any judgment.
Lastly, I wanted something out-of-the-box, something a little unexpected but I wouldn't regret it. Lauren and Jay suggested the "Chunky Monkey" sandwich, which is complete with chunky pb, pretzels, POTATO CHIPS, banana, Reece's peanut butter chips, all on toasted white bread. Before you judge this combo, I dare you to try it. You and your tastebuds can thank me later.
So, after consuming more peanut butter than I probably could have ever imagined consuming (not that I was mad about it at all), I left looking forward to my next visit. With an amazing and friendly staff, endless peanut butter and fun creations, there's nothing not to smile about at Peanut Butter and Jelly Time!
